  • Doctoral Student (Assistant) position in the Center for Marine Research, Laboratory for Evolutionary Ecology.

    The PhD student will be associated with the Croatian Science Foundation project „ The molecular life of the Adriatic Sea Phytoplankton (Adri LIFE)“. This interdisciplinary project encompasses research of marine phytoplankton dynamics through its yearly cycles by following composition and physiological characteristics of the community. Next to in situ and remote oceanographic data collection we will analyse long time data series and work with data bases. The PhD candidate will work on automatic collection and analysis of large sets of oceanographic data and will be expected to master all of these techniques and develop a broad range of key transferrable skills in the field of environmental research and data science in oceanography, the PhD candidate will be expected to enrol in the doctoral study program in Oceanology at the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb.

    Eligibility criteria

    Masters degree (or equivalent) in the field of biology or or chemistry or physics or geophysics or interdisciplinary graduate study in environmental sciences.

    Applications should include: resume, appropriate diploma or certificate of completion of the study, a transcript of passed courses and GPA, e-mail contact of at least one person for a recommendation, and other evidence that the conditions and additional criteria are fulfilled. Appointment to an Assistant position is for a temporary period of 5 years, with a probationary period of 6 months. Doctoral students are required to enroll in doctoral studies program.

    Skills/Qualifications

    Average scores on from the university studies (undergraduate, graduate or interdisciplinary study) that will ensure enrolment in the doctoral study program in Oceanology at the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb.

    Specific Requirements

    It is considered advantageous for PhD candidates who have the following: awards and prizes for excellence in studying and research work, participation in scientific research work, co-authoship of papers, personal presentations at scientific meetings, proficiency in speaking and writing English, experience in laboratory and field work (research vessel), analyses of big data (oceanographic data), willingness for field work (several days). Preference will be given to candidates who have experience or high interest for work with data bases, statistical analyses and remote sensors.
