Offer Description

A tender is open for the attribution of 1 Research Scholarship within the scope of the R&D project/institution “Fluidstructure interaction for functional assessment of ascending aortic aneurysms: a biomechanical-based approach toward clinical practice”, (PTDC/EMD-EMD/1230/2021), funded by Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. /MCTES through national funds (PIDDAC), under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area:

Mechanical Engineering

2. Recipients profile/category:

Mandatory requirements:

Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and related areas, compatible with the scientific project.

The candidate must fulfil the requirements to enrol in training offered at NOVA School of Science and Technology FCT NOVA. The candidate must, when contracting the scholarship, be enrolled in one of the following courses: (1) in the non-academic degree course “Training with Research in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering”; (2) in the doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DEMI).

Preferred factors:

Knowledge and experience in computational simulation techniques applied to Mechanical Engineering; fluency in the English language.

3. Work Plan:

The main objective of this project is to develop and implement a robust framework for computationally efficient model validation, supported by stochastic model updating methods. Patient-specific imagiology exams will be used as raw data, include gated CT angiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) with 4D flow. The DICOM database will be used for solid modelling reconstruction needed in computational modelling. Uncertainty evaluation and automated algorithm will be developed to accomplish this task. The robustness of the Fluid– Structure Interaction (FSI) computational tools for the Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm (ATAA) will be validated using model updating methods, accounting for uncertainties on input parameters that may include geometry, fluid, and solid mechanical properties. This task will concentrate efforts, at an initial stage, on the statistical survey of the uncertain modelling parameters and on the identification of the most adequate strategy for uncertainty quantification and model validation, regarding computational efficiency. At some point the use of fast-running surrogates, as Gaussian processes, Kriging or neural networks, may be considered. This task will be developed in tight collaboration with the project team members developing the numerical modelling, imaging data collection and ex-vivo measurements. The test and validation of the attained model predictions are assessed upon reference data, providing insight on the accuracy and validity to support clinical decisions. This project should be a contribution on the state-of-the-art in uncertainty quantification and model validation, in the framework of biomedical applications.

4. Applicable legislation and regulations:

Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of August 27 (Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow) and amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of October 29, by Law No. 12 /2013 of 29 January, by Decree-Law No. 89/2013, of 9 July and Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28 August; Regulation of Research Grants of NOVA.id.FCT – Association for Innovation and Development of FCT; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force (https: // files.dre.pt/2s/2019/12/241000000/0009100105.pdf);

5. Workplace:

The work will be carried out at the Research Development Unit in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (UNIDEMI) of the NOVA School of Science and Technology FCT NOVA of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa under the scientific supervision of Professors José Manuel Cardoso Xavier and Tiago Alexandre Narciso da Silva, being the contracting entity NOVA.id.FCT – Association for Innovation and Development of FCT.

6. Fellowship duration:

The scholarship will last for twelve months, starting in October 2023. The scholarship contract may be eventually renewed within the term of the project.

7. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:

The amount of the scholarship corresponds to € 1199,64, based on the table of values of the scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country, and payment is made monthly by bank transfer.

8. Selection criteria:

The selection method to be used will be the curricular assessment on a numerical scale from 0 to 20 values. In case the jury deemed necessary, the three candidates with the best classification in the curriculum evaluation will be selected for interview.

- Percentage weighting without interview:

Master's average in the indicated area: 4 values (20%); Knowledge in computational methods such as finite element method: 4 values (20%); Knowledge of inverse and statistical methods: 4 values (20%); Knowledge in programming languages: 4 values (20%); Motivation letter: 2 values (10%); Good command of Portuguese and English languages: 2 values (10%).

- Percentage weighting with interview:

Result of curriculum evaluation without interview (as mentioned above): 12 vaçies (60%); Interview: 8 values (40%).

9. Composition of the Selection Jury:

President: Professor Doutor José Manuel Cardoso Xavier

Effective Member: Professor Doutor Tiago Alexandre Narciso da Silva

Effective Member: Professor Doutor Moisés Gonçalo de Brito

Substitute Member: Professor Doutor Rui Fernando dos Santos Pereira Martins

Substitute Member: Professor Doutor Telmo Jorge Gomes dos Santos.

10. Form of advertising/notification of results:

The evaluation results proposed by the juri will be notified, up to 90 days after the deadline for the submission of applications, by email, of the results proposed by the jury, with access to the minutes and the final ranking list.

After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision (prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure). The final decision will be taken after the expiry of the prior hearing period, again notified to all candidates by e-mail. Of this final decision the candidates can file a complaint within 15 working days (to the e-mail address used for the notification), or an hierarchical appeal, within 30 working days, addressed to NOVA.ID.FCT's Board through the address [email protected].
