Offer Description

Professor in soil ecology. Research on multiscale distribution patterns of soil taxonomic and functional diversity, the composition and structuring of soil organism communities, and/or the link between these communities and soil functioning. Impact of global change on soil functioning ; adaptation of soil functioning to global changes.

ESTABLISHMENT STRATEGY

Scientific research in Montpellier is structured within the framework of the University of Montpellier and its partners around the three pillars of "Nourish, Care, Protect". Ecology-related themes are central to this, as shown by the international rankings in this field for several years. In this scheme, the study of soils deserves particular attention, because of the large proportion of living species they host, and their central role in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems and the production of ecosystem services for society. On the scale of the Occitanie region, this observation has been largely taken into account, as shown by the financing of a consortium project related to soil ecology in the framework of the BiodivOc key challenge. At the level of the institution, the desire to be part of national (e.g. FairCarboN) and international (e.g. BiodivERsA) initiatives in this field is also clearly stated. The person recruited will be part of this priority dynamic of the institution's strategy, thus strengthening Montpellier's already strong leadership in the field of soil ecology.

HOST LABORATORY STRATEGY

The UMR CEFE is one of the main research laboratories in the field of ecology. It plays a structuring role in research in this field, both at the regional level (see its involvement in the Labex CEMEB) and at the international level (see its role in the LMI BIO-INCA). The CEFE develops research aimed at understanding the dynamics, functioning and evolution of living organisms, in the context of global changes, the development of new technologies for the manipulation of living organisms, and the growing demands of society on research actors. We work at a great variety of field sites around the world, but developed particular expertise in Mediterranean and tropical ecosystems. One of our main objectives is to develop scenarios on the evolution of biological systems, as well as strategies for their conservation and their restoration Four departments cover complementary fields of ecology: Evolutionary and Behavioral Ecology (EEC), Functional Ecology (FE), Dynamics and Conservation of Biodiversity (DCB), and Ecology and Society Interactions (INES). Three of them (EF, DCB, INES) are developing research in relation to soil ecology, positioning the laboratory as a major player in research in this field. In this context, it is expected that the proposed research project will be integrated into one of the above-mentioned departments and that the person recruited will be able to make proposals to strengthen the links between research and teaching.

TEACHING PROJECT

The person recruited will develop and structure ecology courses from the first year of the bachelor's degree to the last year of the master's degree. In the bachelor's degree program, he/she will be involved in the teaching of organism biology (tissues, organs, individuals, all clades combined), general ecology, functional ecology, community ecology and/or naturalist specialization. In the Master's program, he/she should be able to propose original teaching methods based on innovative teaching practices in the field of soil ecology. More specifically, the person will be able to propose teaching sequences that will enable students to be trained in the general concepts of soil ecology, in methods for studying the biological functioning of soils (particularly in the field), in innovative techniques for measuring soil biodiversity (e.g. environmental DNA, image analysis), and in approaches for analyzing the distribution and structuring patterns of ecological communities (e.g. functional traits, interaction networks). The successful candidate will be comfortable with current teaching techniques. He/she will also be expected to participate in the administration of the teaching (responsible or co-responsible for teaching units, notably in the bachelor's degree program).

SCIENTIFIC PROJECT

The person recruited must master the concepts and tools of soil ecology. He/she will propose a research project related to the study and understanding of multiscale distribution patterns of soil taxonomic and functional diversity, the composition and structuring of soil organism communities, and/or the link between these communities and soil functioning. Her project will be carried out in the context of ongoing global changes and will seek to measure their impacts on soil organisms. It will rely on descriptive, experimental or theoretical approaches, and will be able to mobilize different tools such as the use of functional traits, the latest generation of molecular tools or the application of network theory. The biological models studied could be microorganisms or soil fauna, and the environments considered could include natural, agricultural or urban contexts, in France or internationally (for example in the framework of the LMI BIO-INCA). The person recruited will be able to develop and manage fundamental and/or collaborative research programs with civil society (managers, citizens, users, civil administrators) and in relation with public policies.
