Offer Description

About the position

Contract type: Chaire de Professeur Junior 1. Successful applicants will first be hired on a ‘CDD de projet' contract and tenure will occur at IMT Professor level.

Location: IMT Atlantique, Brest campus

Partners: Ifremer, Inria,

Key words : AI, applications to earth systems, extreme climate events, machine learning, dynamical systems, observing systems

Thematic and research challenges

The impact of global change on the occurrence and intensity of climate extremes (e.g., cyclones, heat waves, etc.) is a critical societal issue. The ability to understand, observe and predict these events and their impacts is also a major scientific challenge. In this perspective, the hybridization between earth science, numerical modelling, applied mathematics and artificial intelligence opens new avenues. The successful candidate will strengthen IMT Atlantique's expertise in AI applied to ocean-atmosphere-climate (OAC) sciences by the development of learning-based methods for the modelling, forecasting and reanalysis of OAC processes, with a specific emphasis on extremes.

The successful candidate will join the Lab-STICC laboratory (UMR 6285) and Inria team Odyssey, (https: // www. inria.fr/fr/odyssey). Odyssey gathers a unique interdisciplinary expertise at the interface of applied mathematics, artificial intelligence and ocean sciences. It addresses the scientific, industrial and societal challenges of ocean observation and modelling towards the development of the next-generation of digital twins of the oceans.

The successful candidate will reinforce Odyssey expertise on the modelling, prediction and observation of extreme phenomena and of their impacts, particularly ocean-related extremes (e.g., cyclones, extreme waves, risk of submersion, heat waves, algal blooms....). From a methodological point of view, research topics of key interest include, but are not limited to, machine learning and extreme value theory, representation learning with/for OAC extremes, data-driven simulation of space-time processes with extremes, inverse problems and uncertainty quantification with extremes…

Beyond the research environment granted by IMT Atlantique and Inria team Odyssey, including access to cutting-edge GPU computing and data storage resources, the successful candidate will benefit from a dedicated research grant of 250 000€ to develop his/her autonomous research track in an international context.

Eco-system and context:

IMT Atlantique internationally recognized for the quality of its research, is a leading technological university ranked in the three main international rankings (THE, SHANGHAI, QS).

IMT Atlantique has privileged relationships with major industrial national and international partners, as well as a dense network of SME, start-ups and innovation networks. With 290 permanent faculty members, 2000 students among which 300 PhD students, IMT Atlantique produces every year 1000 publications and raises 18M€ of research funding.

The position is opened on the Brest campus of IMT Atlantique within the Mathematical and Electrical Engineering Department (MEE) and attached to the CNRS Research Unit Lab-STICC and Odyssey Inria team in the context of high- impact research initiatives such as ERC STUOD, AI Chair OceaniX as well as EU projects Edito Model Lab and AI4PEX.

Education:

The education program of IMT Atlantique has been recognized as amongst the most innovative in French High Education and Research and offers large possibilities of developing innovative engineering curriculum and educational approach.

The successful candidate will contribute to and develop training tracks on AI, Applied Math and/or Environmental Sciences. He/She will be invited to propose new educational projects, programs and methodologies, especially inspired by and supported by industrial and institutional requirements and partnerships.

Skills/Qualifications

Expected competences:

We welcome high-profile candidates with a PhD and demonstrated contributions in the fields of AI, Data Science and/or Applied Math and related application fields (e.g., Computer Vision, Signal Processing, Remote Sensing) with a strong interest in environmental sciences. Previous experience in interdisciplinary research context, especially at the interface between machine learning and physics and/or machine learning and geoscience is a plus but not a requirement.

We also welcome high-profile candidates with a PhD in the fields of earth sciences with demonstrated expertise in the exploitation and development of machine learning, applied math and/or applied statistics to address key scientific challenges.

In all cases, the candidate shall demonstrate his/her ability to develop and lead high-impact research activities at the crossroads of AI and earth science with an emphasis on climate extremes in the inter-disciplinary environment offered by IMT Atlantique and Inria team Odyssey.

The chair holder will actively engage in Open Science including publishing in Open Access journals, publishing experimental data as well as developing open data challenges.

In addition, please carefully read the generic competencies expected of candidates for Associate professor positions at IMT Atlantique at the following address : https: // www. imt-atlantique.fr/en/about/job- offers?arg=776728158

Indicators for monitoring the deployment of the project and the methodology for their monitoring.

The Chair holder will update his or her scientific strategy and success indicators (publications, prizes and awards, financial management, recruitments, valorization of research results) on a yearly basis. A formalized interview, containing follow-up indicators, will be carried out annually with a scientific manager in order to follow the evolution of the work and the concordance of the results with the targeted goals. The interview will conclude with the definition of improvement actions concerning the scientific strategy and the good management of human and financial resources. Intermediate meetings may be agreed upon if necessary.

Success indicators at the end of the tenure track period

  • Scientific advising: 5 (co)-advised PhDs (defended or ongoing)
  • Scientific production:
  • 10 publications in major international scientific journals, top-tier international ML conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, AISTATS) and/or patents.
  • 15-20 presentations in international conferences at the interface of AI and OAC sciences (e.g., EGU, AGU, Climate Informatics, ML4PS…)
  • Individual excellence: submission of an ERC starting grant, or ANR JCJC project
