  • Applications are now opened for one research fellowship for a bachelor (BI) for the project FRONTSH1P “A FRONTrunner approacTransition to a circular & resilient future: deployment of systemic solutions with the support of local clusters and the development of regional community-based innovation schemes' — (Application Number: 101037031), funded by the European Commission through H2020-LC-GD-2020-3, under the following conditions:

    Scientific Area: Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry.

    Admission requirement s: Candidates must be enrolled in a Master program in the areas of Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Chemistry, Biotechnology, or related fields.

    Preference factors: Knowledge in the areas of chemical engineering and biochemical processing of lignocellulosic biomass. Candidates must be proficient in English.

    Work plan: It is expected that the candidate will carry out research work within the scope of the above-mentioned project tasks, namely conducting studies on pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass and enzymatic hydrolysis trials of lignocellulosic biomass following by the characterization of the obtained streams. The work includes the use of methods for chemical characterization of lignocellulosic biomass, enzyme activities assaying and enzymatic hydrolysis for production of concentrated sugars solutions.

    Application deadline: Applications are open from the 21st of November until the 5th of December 2022.

    Work location and supervisor : The activities will be carried out at the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia I.P. – Unidade Bioenergia e Biorrefinarias in Lumiar Campus under the scientific supervision of Rafal Marcin Lukasik (PhD) and Susana Oliveira Marques (PhD).

    Research fellowship duration: The duration of the fellowship is 22 months, expected to start on the 1st of January 2023, with possible renewal up to the end of the project (October 2025).


    Monthly maintenance allowance: The monthly allowance of the fellowship corresponds to 875,98€, according to the FCT Regulation for Research Fellowships in the Country (https:// www. The payment is made monthly by bank transfer. The candidate to be hired may exercise his right to social insurance by joining the voluntary social insurance system. If the fellowship holder wishes to apply to voluntary social security, the contributions will be covered by the LNEG. All fellows will benefit from personal accident insurance supported by the LNEG.

    Eligible candidates: Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions provided in article 9 of the Research Fellowship Regulations of FCT I.P (2019).

    Selection process

    d) Documents proving the academic degrees obtained and their classification; or in the alternative, may be replaced by a declaration under honor;

    e) Proof of enrolment in the course that is attending in a Master program.

    Note: Foreign certificates may only be considered valid when submitted with their recognition record by a Portuguese higher education institution, as established by the Decree-Law 66/2018 of August 16, and the Decree-Law 60/2018, of August 03, alternatively, presenting the document of recognition/equivalence of foreign qualifications to the corresponding Portuguese qualifications with the classifications officially converted to the Portuguese scale by DGES https: // www. or by an institution of public higher education, even if the foreign scale is 1 to 20.

    Evaluation and selection criteria: The evaluation of the applications will focus on the candidate's Merit, applying the following criteria, in order of importance:

    a) Personal curriculum (which reflects the scientific and professional path relevant to the scientific area);

    b) Relevant experience acquired;

    c) Interview (only for candidates selected based on criteria a) and b).

    The candidate´s classification will be obtained by applying the following formula:

    Total: 0.45×A+0.40×B+0.15×C


    A is the classification between 0 e 5 obtained in point a.

    B is the classification between 0 e 5 obtained in point b.

    C is the classification between 0 e 5 obtained in point c.

    The candidates will be selected for an interview when the sum of the criteria A+B will be equal to or greater than the 7 rating scale.

    Form of advertising/notification of results: The final evaluation results will be communicated by email to the candidates attaching for this purpose, the minutes with the Jury deliberation. Candidates for a possible interview will be notified in writing through email. During the period of the competition, candidates must consult the email address indicated daily, in order to stay informed about its progress. The final results of the evaluation will also be posted on the premises of the LNEG, in Estrada da Portela – Zambujal – Alfragide.

    If the result is unfavorable to the granting of the fellowship, the candidates have a period of 10 working days on the draft decision at the prior hearing of interested parties, according to articles 121º and 122º of the Code of the Administrative Procedure (DL nº 4/2015 of January 7). At the end of the period set for the hearing of interested parties and in the absence of any response, the ranking list will become final.
