  • Assistant (f/m, 1 executor) for a fixed period of five years for the purpose of obtaining the academic degree of Doctor of Science in tasks related to the implementation of the project IPS-2020-01-2616 Development of building blocks for the new European quantum communication network and the CALT project - Center for advanced laser techniques. The supervisor of the doctoral student (mentor) is Ph.D. Ticijana Ban (ticijana@ifs.hr).

    The research topic is in the field of experimental atomic and molecular physics. The goal of the research is the realization of a quantum memory optimized for use in quantum repeaters that enable quantum communication over long distances. Quantum memories enable the temporary storage of the photonic quantum state through its conversion into a collective atomic state. The development of quantum memories is currently an active area of ​​research. Quantum memories that use rubidium atoms as a storage medium will be investigated, and protocols based on electromagnetic-induced transparency (EIT) and atomic frequency comb (AFC) will be used to store photon states. Memory properties such as memory efficiency, photon storage time, spectral width, noise and multimode character will be studied depending on the applied protocol for warm and cold rubidium atoms.

    Research methods include high-resolution laser spectroscopy, frequency stabilization techniques of continuous-wave lasers and optical frequency combs, and laser cooling and trapping techniques.

    The research is carried out in the Quantum Technologies Group in the CALT department at the Institute of Physics.

    Candidates are expected to have very good knowledge of atomic physics, high motivation to work in the laboratory on the described topic, and excellent knowledge of the English language.

    Priority will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in studies and research work (recognitions, awards, scholarships, published works, presentations at conferences, etc.).

    Hands-on experience with the research topic, including experimental techniques, is an advantage.

    Completed Undergraduate and Postgraduate Study (Master's degree) in Physics or equivalent degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate, and enroll in a PhD School of Physics.

    Selection process

    The application must include: evidence of fulfillment of mandatory requirements, certificate of academic degree(s) in physics, motivation letter with a brief description of scientific interests and plans, curriculum vitae indicating the advantages and experience of candidates and contact details of at least one mentor or a scientist from whom a recommendation may be requested.
