Offer Description

Assistant Doctoral Student (m/f 1 position) at the Institute of Physics for a fixed-term period of 5 years.

The supervisor of the assistant (mentor) will be Dr. Ivan Balog ([email protected]). The research topic will be focused on the theoretical description of critical behavior with a strong influence of rare excitations. Examples of such phenomena include Goldstone modes in the description of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz- Thouless transition, instantons in the critical behavior of the Ising chain in 1D, as well as "droplet excitations" in glassy materials. The goal is to develop a methodology of Nonperturbative Renormalization Group for such problems using a derivative expansion approach and establish connections with exact results whenever possible. The first phase of the work will deal with the development of the approach for the lower critical dimension in the Ising system. Experience in statistical physics methods and renormalization groups is desirable.

High motivation and excellent knowledge of the English language are expected.

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in scientific work (awards, scholarships, published papers, conference presentations, etc.) and who have practical experience in related topics.

Mandatory requirements: completed undergraduate university studies in physics, research direction, or equivalent, and fulfillment of the requirements for enrollment in the relevant doctoral program in physics, field of physics.

The application should include: evidence of fulfillement of mandatory requirements, certificate of Master's degree in physics, a leter of motivation with a brief description of scientific interests and plans, a CV indicating the candidate's strengths and experience and the contact information of at least one mentor or a scientist from whom the recommendation can be requested.

Candidates who exercise the right to priority in employment according to the Act on Croatian Veterans of the Homeland War and Members of Their Families (Official Gazette No.121/17 and 98/19, 84/21) and the Act on Civilian Victims of the Homeland War (Official Gazette 84/21)with the application for the competition, in addition to proof of fulfillment of the required conditions, they must also attach all the necessary evidence available on the link of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs:
