Department of Communication, Quality Management and Information Systems

The department operates on both Campus Östersund and Campus Sundsvall. At the department, education and research are conducted in the subjects of media and communication science, quality technology and management and Information systems.

Within the Software Engineering and Education (SEE) research group, we create methods and tools for software development and its education. Software defines a critical part of our society's digitalization, and developers need to possess central competency for the creation and maintenance of digital systems and services while facing continuous and unpredictable technological progress. Amongst other things, we work on the improvement of testing methods for artificial intelligence and machine learning software, a heightened understanding for how educational interventions shall be implemented to lead to more efficient but even more equality and sustainability in the work environment for developers. In our research group we combine technical (computer engineering/science) and social sciences (informatics/information systems) backgrounds.

Through this announcement, we are seeking a PhD student position within the information sciences research subject. Please find some of the research questions of interest here:

  • The investigation of specifically developers doing remote-work in co- working spaces and its effect on them and the organisations they work for,
  • The industrial competency demands within software engineering and how the educational system fulfils those demands,
  • The development of educational interventions for a sustainable life-long development of software professionals considering the many and sudden technological changes (such as those entailed by large language models).
  • The need and possible strategies for the introduction of automation and augmentation within the software workforce, for instance within software testing.
  • Other questions that fall within the SEE scope as mentioned above are also of interest.

Job description Independent third-cycle studies encompassing research 80%, teaching and administrative tasks 20%.

Entry requirements General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of information systems or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Assessment criteria The assessment will be based on three criteria. Firstly, we assess the candidate's ability to conduct research, presented through bachelor or master theses and other scientific texts. Secondly, we assess the outline and motivation of the project proposal with respect to the SEE research group that must accompany the application. The project proposal shall describe a research idea and plan for how the idea shall be implemented in a project leading up to a PhD degree. The proposal shall pinpoint a context including research questions that clearly relate to the SEE research group interests. Thirdly, we assess the ability to successfully pursue graduate studies.

Personal qualities Personal qualities of importance are the ability to collaborate with others, the ability to take initiative, and the competence to pursue graduate studies. These are weighted in with the formal subject-competency for an overall assessment.
