RESEARCH FIELD Power electronics play a key role in the energy transition. Especially the field of power electronics related to extreme environments and challenging applications is expanding. These extreme conditions impose several boundary conditions that impact device choices, reliability and fault tolerance and require excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). In the PhD studies, new power electronic solutions will be developed for challenging applications that need out-of-the-box thinking and innovative implementations in order to meet the boundary conditions of the extreme conditions the power electronics is supposed to operate in. The research will be performed in close collaboration with industry, with one of the positions focusing on maritime electrification.

The research topics include and are not limited to:

  • Technical requirement capture and optimization of several parameters related to the harsh conditions
  • Utilization of WBG devices (eg: GaN) for extremely high efficiency and power densities
  • Extreme efficient power electronic topologies for processing high power at high frequencies
  • Compare several intelligent gate driver options and their implementation for high frequency applications
  • Active power buffer and implementation for compliance testing and to meet relevant EMC standards
  • Multi-objective optimization of the power electronics system considering several objectives including high efficiency, high power density, low weight, EMC (upfront) among others
  • Advanced power electronics + EMC co-design, hardware prototype development, testing and measurements
  • Environmental testing including temperature and humidity in climate chambers among others
  • Your profile
  • We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and curiosity-driven researcher;
  • You have, or are about to get, a master's degree in electrical engineering with focus on power electronics or a relevant related field;
  • You have a background in physical electronics, analytical mathematics and numerical simulations;
  • Prior knowledge and experience with simulation tools (MATLAB, SPICE, FEM Analysis) and power electronics R&D (designing, debugging, testing ) etc. is an advantage;
  • You are an excellent teammate in an enthusiastic and hardworking group of scientists and engineers working within the PE group;
  • You are creative, like to push boundaries, and are highly motivated to address major science challenges in power electronics and electromagnetics;
  • You are driven by not only scientific excellence but also the societal impact of technology;
  • You are proficient in English and able to collaborate intensively with industrial and academic parties in regular meetings and work visits.
  • Our offer
  • As a PhD student at UT, you will be appointed to a full-time position for four years, with a qualifier in the first year, within a very stimulating and exciting scientific environment;

  • Your salary and associated conditions are in accordance with the collective labour agreement for Dutch universities (CAO-NU);
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary ranging from € 2.541,- (first year) to € 3.247,- (fourth year);
  • There are excellent benefits including a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, and a solid pension scheme;
  • The flexibility to work (partially) from home;
  • A minimum of 232 leave hours in case of full-time employment based on a formal workweek of 38 hours. A full-time employment in practice means 40 hours a week, therefore resulting in 96 extra leave hours on an annual basis.
