We seek 2 outstanding Doctoral Candidates (PhD students) to develop Fluorescence Microscopy for the study of multi-component soft materials, including super-resolution and single molecule microscopy techniques (details below). The Doctoral Candidate (DC) will be hired within the Doctoral Network MultiSMART, composed of 6 Universities, 1 Research Institute and 3 Private Sector partners (from France, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom) who will hire 11 PhD students in total. The DC will be enrolled in the PhD program of the Université de Bordeaux, and perform research at the “Institut des Sciences Moléculaires” in the group NEO. They will be supervised by Pr. André Del Guerzo. Mobility as well as excellent scientific and soft-skill qualifications of the DC will be promoted throughout the network with (i) common research goals, (ii) two temporary 3-months stays at network partners (secondments), one being in the private sector, (iii) regular schools and workshops. The Doctoral Network is financed by the European Union under the framework of the program HORIZON Europe, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. The DC will be hired for 36 months under contract by the Université de Bordeaux with a monthly gross salary of approximatively 3000 € (including mobility allowance) or approximatively 3300 € (including additionally family allowance). The family allowance depends on the marital status of the DC. A general view of available positions can also be found at the following address:

In Bordeaux, we are looking for candidates, without gender or nationality discrimination but with mobility requirement, with interest in fluorescence, microscopy, optics, photophysics, photochemistry and data/image analyses. Goals of the PhD project include the exploration of complex soft materials and biomaterials, to determine their 3D-structures and dynamic behavior, as well as the diffusion properties of molecules embedded therein. The study will involve state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, including application of super-resolution techniques and optics development, single particle diffusion studies, as well as the study of new fluorophores (molecular and nanoparticles), innovative nano-photochemical approaches, and plasmonic light amplification. Extensive data analyses will be performed, possibly including software development. Applications of the materials will be studied in collaboration with the network partners on skin permeation, cosmetics, drug delivery and spinal cord regeneration.
