  • Researcher Profile: First Stage Researcher (R1)
  • Application Deadline: 10/10/2022 23:00 - Europe/Brussels
  • Location: Italy › PISA
  • Type Of Contract: Other
  • Job Status: Other
  • Eu Research Framework Programme: H2020 / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
  • Marie Curie Grant Agreement Number: 956099
  • The European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network NanED funded by EU (Grant Agreement n. 956099) brings together 8 beneficiaries and 16 partners belonging to 9 European countries, including the participation of 10 partners from the private sector.

NanED mission is to train 15 PhD students (Early Stage Researchers) that will form a new generation of electron crystallographers thereby paving the way for future development and establishment of the method more broadly in the academic community and within the industry.

NaneD includes all European scientists hitherto active in the development of electron diffraction methods for structural crystallography and a pool of large and small companies interested in instruments development and materials or pharmaceuticals production and analysis.

Electron diffraction for structural crystallography has grown considerably after the development of dedicated protocols for data acquisition and analysis, to the point where it was listed in Science magazine as one of the major scientific breakthroughs of the year 2018. The so-called "3D" electron diffraction (3D ED) is a novel method for atomic structure determination of inorganic, organic and macromolecular compounds when their crystal size falls in the scale of few tenth of nanometer.

Up to now, the development of 3D ED has remained limited to a few laboratories and has been slowed by the lack of both dedicated instruments and young researchers trained in this field at PhD level. NanED aims to form a new generation of electron crystallographers, able to master and develop 3D ED techniques in an interdisciplinary and interconnected network, where competences and know-how of usually distant scientific sectors are shared and merged. NanED will boost the dissemination of 3D ED in academic and industrial laboratories, pushing Europe to be the leader for nanomaterial characterization and development, with a noticeable and global economic impact.

The 7 beneficiaries of the NanED network are: Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (NanED Coordinator, IT), Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (FR), The Czech Academy of Sciences (CZ), Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz (DE), Stockholms Universitet (SE), Universiteit Antwerpen (BE), Universität Basel (CH).

During the programme, each ESR will undertake 3-5 secondments, each lasting 1-2 months. All ESRs employed by an academic partner will have at least one secondment with an industrial partner.

Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia - IIT (Center for Materials Interfaces, Pontedera) offers 1 Fellowship on “Fine structure of 2D materials studied by 3D ED”.

The ESRs will be primarily operating at the Center for Materials Interfaces (CMI@SSSA) in Pontedera Italy, in the group of Dr. Mauro Gemmi.

The ESRs will develop the concepts of 3D ED for low-dimensional materials: optimizing data collection protocols from 2D crystals (step-wise scans, continuous rotation), experiments at different temperature; structure factor calculation for 2D crystals (including non-monoatomic layers, e.g. MoS2, Bi2Se3, end heterostructures); development of models for out of plane atomic displacements in 2D crystals (layer corrugation) and calculation of their signature in 3D ED data.

    Start date : January 2023

Duration of contract : contract for 26 months

Salary : The Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme offers highly competitive and attractive salaries. Gross and net amounts are subject to country-specific deductions as well as individual factors such as family allowance. This will be discussed in detail during the interview.
